New Mexico Trail Leather Doc's Links We have lots of friends on the internet including other custom carvers and businesses with which we work. We also know how frustrating it can be to try to find specific products or information on the internet. The following links are provided to help the leather working community keep connected. When you contact these folks, tell them Doc Hayes in New Mexico sent you! Thanks!! Tandy Leather - Check with my friend, Ruben Saiz at Tandy Leather in Albuquerque. He's a great guy and will bend over backwards to see that you get what you need in high quality, quickly. The store is located at the SW corner of Menaul and Wyoming; phone 505-296-3255 (toll free 800-295-8190). Stop by or give him a call... you may even see me there :-). Remember: he ships nationally and quickly...so you don't have to live near Albuquerque to be an appreciated customer. Diablo Canyon Leather - Check with Paul Brinegar, the owner and maker at Diablo Canyon. Paul and I have become good friends in a relatively short time. He is a great leatherworker and does beautiful Sheridan style carving (along with other western styles). You may also recognize his name if you are a fan of Western movies and tv programs... he is named for his uncle who was a well-known character acter perhaps most widely known for his work as Wishbone on the tv series Rawhide. Cowboy Showcase - Showcase for the Cowboy Way and the spirit of the American west featuring authentic ranch stories, cowboy lore, photos, western saddles, cowboy tack, horses, and western lifestyle. East Mountain New Mexico - Rey Fulwiler has a great site with links to all kinds of information relative to the East Mountain area of New Mexico (East of Albuquerque). Check his site out! Southwest Billiard Tables - Check out my friend, Dave Hamrick's site where he sells beautiful handcrafted billiard tables in Southwest styles. I do carved leather panels for some of these. You can see an example in my portfolio. Peter Main - Peter has a fantastic site! His art demonstrates both traditional and innovative approaches to leather design. I have long admired his work and turn to his designs frequently for inspiration and encouragement to try new techniques. He is an inspiration to us all. New Mexico Roadrunner Leather Artisans Guild (new website coming soon)- This is the local leather crafters' group to which I belong. It is not a huge group but is full of friendly, sharing, talented and excited people. It is a true honor to part of this group. PSLAC - Puget Sound Leather Artisans Co-op - A large, friendly group of carver's centered in the Puget Sound area but with members all over the world (including me... Doc Hayes). IILG - International Internet Leathercrafters Guild Brettuns Village - Great source for leather! Especially small to medium pieces that are remnants from manufacturers. Churchill is a great guy to deal with and be sure to sign up for his newsletter. It's great! The Leather Crafters & Saddlers Journal - This is a great publication! Every two months a new journal comes out that is packed with tips, patterns, and other sharing. Also, this is a great place to find sources for tools, leather, etc. Here's their contact info: Leather Crafters & Saddlers Journal Hide Crafter Leathercraft - George Hurst and his crew have a great retail outfit. George also does outstanding video instruction materials... I've viewed most of them and recommend them highly to my friends! Ohio Travel Bag - If you haven't found these folks yet you better check them out. When you are looking for that special kind of fasterner, handle, etc. this is probably where you will find it. The only drawback is a $75 minimum order... but heck it's not hard to buy $75 worth of stuff from these folks ;-) Siegel of California - Great source for tools, etc. Weaver Leather - An outstanding supply source for the saddlemaker and serious leather crafter! Dusty Johnson and Pleasant Valley Saddle Shop - Dusty has great videos on saddle making, holster making etc. He also offers individualize training in saddle making for a luck few individuals each year. Help me keep this list current. If you know of a great resource that I have not listed (it may be you or your company) or if you find a broken link, please let me know so I can add and fix links as we go. Remember, this is your community too... and I want it to be a real resource! Email me. -Doc |
